When you lose several teeth – whether it’s a new situation or something you have lived with for years – chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself. Now you can start over! In use for many years, dental implants are effective, natural-looking replacements for missing teeth, enabling millions of people to eat, smile and speak without worrying about loose dentures slipping or gaps showing from missing teeth. With titanium screw-in tooth roots we can offer replacement teeth that look, feel and function just like natural teeth. Whether you are missing one or all of your teeth with facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss, dental implants can be your doorway to renewed comfort and self-confidence to pursue an active business and social life.

Dental implants are titanium screws with specially activated surfaces. The first step is the placement of the titanium implant in the jawbone. Implants function in a similar way to a natural tooth root. The bone grows unto them in a process called osseo-integration. The implants remain in the bone covered by gum for approximately 3 to 6 months. During this time the implants should fuse to the bone. Sometimes bone regenerative procedures may be necessary to stabilize implants during placement and also to ensure the optimal quantity of bone.

You can help the implants osseo-integrate by avoiding a lot of pressure on your jaw, for example eating softer food, practicing meticulous plaque control and adhering to the post-operative instructions. The second step of the procedure involves uncovering the implants and attaching a post or an abutment (small metal connectors) to each implant. These abutments complete the foundation on which your teeth will be placed. In some instances, the abutments can be placed at the time of the initial surgery thereby eliminating the second phase.

The final step is the placement of the new tooth by the restorative and referring dentist, now that the implants and abutments are in place and the jawbone and gums have healed. With techniques that ensure optimal size, shape, colour and fit, the replacement tooth will blend in with the remaining teeth. The replacement teeth should also blend in with facial characteristics while providing the support needed for a natural appearance. The replacement prosthesis can be removable or fixed, or a combination of both. It takes a dedicated team made up of you, the surgeon and restorative dentist to make your dental implant work. Your commitment to oral hygiene and optimal plaque control will mean that you can chew and smile with comfort and confidence for many years to come.
